The pictures were taken from Badamtoli Ghat, one of the main river ports in Buriganga. The pictures were taken in March 2021 during the peak season of the fruits.
Basically, watermelon is good for health during the summer season. These juicy fruits help to reduce heatstroke risk. Lots of types of watermelon are produced here in Bangladesh. The demand for the fruits goes high as it is comparably cheap fruits in the country. Traders start to bring the summer fruits in the capital city Dhaka from various parts of the country special from southern areas. In the photos, the watermelons were picked from the Rangabali area of the Patuakhali district.
A huge amount of watermelon is grown in beach-oriented districts like Barguna and Patuakhali. The melons weigh between five and 12 kilograms. The price of the fruits varies from Tk20 to Tk45 per kilogram.
This crop plays an important role in the local economy. A good number of people got involved with the temporary farming and trading of fruits.
The workers in the photos got a lump sum amount as they work for the wholesaler. The main profit goes to the pocket of the wholesalers. Each laborer gets Tk300 to Tk500 per day for transporting those from the cargo boats.
